In the face of rapid urbanization and climate change, creating sustainable and resilient urban environments has become a pressing global challenge. This PhD project, titled "Sustainable Urban Futures: Integrating Smart Technologies and Urban Ecology for Resilient City Planning," aims to address this challenge by exploring how smart technologies can be synergistically integrated with principles of urban ecology to enhance the sustainability and resilience of urban landscapes.

This research acknowledges the critical need for cities to adapt to environmental changes, manage resources efficiently, and improve the quality of life for their inhabitants. It proposes a novel approach that combines the data-driven capabilities of smart technologies—such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data analytics—with ecological strategies to create urban spaces that are both technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable.

The project will pursue several interconnected objectives:

  1. Theoretical Framework Development: Developing a comprehensive theoretical framework that articulates the integration of smart technologies with urban ecological principles. This framework will serve as the foundation for designing resilient and sustainable urban environments.

  2. Smart Technology and Urban Ecology Synergy: Identifying and analyzing the potential synergies between smart technologies and urban ecology. This includes exploring how IoT devices can monitor environmental conditions, how AI can optimize resource use, and how big data analytics can support sustainable urban planning decisions.

  3. Case Studies and Best Practices: Conducting case studies of cities that have successfully implemented smart technologies and ecological strategies. These case studies will provide insights into best practices, challenges, and lessons learned that can inform future urban planning efforts.

  4. Design and Simulation of Urban Models: Designing and simulating innovative urban models that incorporate smart technologies and ecological principles. These models will demonstrate how cities can improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon footprints, enhance biodiversity, and increase resilience to climate change.

  5. Policy Recommendations and Implementation Strategies: Developing policy recommendations and implementation strategies for integrating smart technologies and urban ecology into city planning. This will involve engaging with stakeholders, including urban planners, policymakers, and communities, to ensure the practical applicability and scalability of the proposed solutions.

  6. Impact Assessment: Assessing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of integrating smart technologies and urban ecology. This includes evaluating the potential benefits for climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and human well-being.

This interdisciplinary project stands at the intersection of urban planning, environmental science, and technology.
